Southern Styria is famous for excellent Austrian wines. In among the many vineyards lies the Fischer' cheese dairy and farm, with its 24 dairy cows and their offspring. We are able to feed our dairy cows on hay from our 27 ha of grassland.
For this purpose we have constructed a new hay drying plant, for in my opinion hay is the healthiest animal feed for cows. Its high energy content of 5.81 MJ NEL, its high protein content and the major intake as staple food allow me to save a fair amount on concentrated feed.
The smell of the drying hay enchants everyone in the village and I am very glad that I took the decision to convert to hay, for the quality of the hay and the large proportion of aromatic herbs make my milk and cheese into something special in the region.
We also have something special and unusual - the exhibition room attached to our farm shop with the hay drying exhibition. This lets anyone interested see for how our hay drying system works in operation, what it is composed of, what has to be considered and how it is controlled.
On 4th June we organised a Farm Festival. The musical entertainment was excellent and our "kitchen team" made sure there was a delicious culinary spread. Even well-known faces, such as Franz Titschenbacher, the President of the Styrian Chamber of Agriculture and the Mayor, Ursula Malli honoured us with their presence. They both praised the team work and the HSR drying system in glowing terms. We constructed a bouncy castle out of hay for the little children, which gave them hours of fun. The day concluded with a competition to guess the weight of a hay bale hanging on the outstretched arm of our hay crane. Wonderful prizes were prepared for the winners!
